Gum Disease-the most common cause of tooth loss in adults
Gum disease symptoms, bleeding gums, reversing gum diseaseMore commonly known as gum disease, periodontal disease is one of the most common diseases that adults from around the world encounter. Many dental conditions come from this disease, Some can even become serious, affecting the heart and respiratory system.
Periodontal disease starts as an infection of the gum tissues in between the teeth. The Sulcus, which is the V-shaped gum portion, found between each tooth is a perfect candidate for tartar build-up and as a breeding ground for bacteria. As infection progresses in the gums, this may cause its cohesiveness with the tooth enamel to loosen and for the gums to recede. This will then create a pocket where more bacteria may reside. The bigger the pocket size, the more severe the disease.
Periodontal diseases may also be classified into two categories. The first is the more prevalent, popularly known as gingivitis. Gingivitis is the initial and milder form of periodontal disease, which at this stage, is still reversible. If left untreated, it can evolve into a more serious condition known as periodontitis. Sadly, this is somewhat irreparable. Periodontitis can cause severe damage to the tissues of the gums and also result in permanent bone loss.
Symptoms of Gum Disease include:
- Bleeding gums while brushing or flossing your teeth
- Pain while chewing
- Red, sore, swollen gums
- Build up of calculus (tartar)

- Teeth sensitivity to hot and cold
